Kherson is a tourist city, where many vacationers go in the summer. And this is not surprising, because from there it is very close to the sea, magnificent beaches, warm water. But Kherson itself is an interesting city located on the Dnieper coast. And those who go to the sea should

stay in Kherson for at least a few hours and look at the local architectural monuments. And there are not so few of them.

So, first you can visit the Catherine Cathedral. By the way, Kherson itself was founded by order of Catherine II. Prince Potemkin was involved in the construction of the city. He built an outpost, which was supposed to protect from enemies. But, the city had to become not only well protected, but also beautiful. Therefore, Potemkin decided to build a temple in the classical style. The construction was completed in 1776. The cathedral became part of the architectural ensemble of the fortress. Next to the temple, in fact, behind its fence, a necropolis was founded for nobles and officers who died in the war between the Russian Empire and Turkey. Potemkin himself was buried in the cathedral. In Soviet times, the temple, like many other religious buildings, was unlucky - it was plundered and then turned into a granary. Already in the days of Independence, the cathedral was returned to its status and given to the Orthodox Church.

If we have already started a conversation about Catherine and Potemkin, it is worth mentioning that in Kherson there is a monument to Potemkin, which the Empress ordered to be installed after his death. The monument was erected in 1836. Then Potemkin Boulevard was built next to it. Strange things happened to that monument during its existence. For example, in 1917, when the city was occupied by the Reds, it was decided to cover the monument with a tarpaulin, for some reason they did not dare to remove it. Therefore, for a long time, the monument to Potemkin was called the "Kherson ghost". And in 1944, when the Nazi invaders left Kherson, they simply stole the monument and took it with them. The monument to the prince was restored in 2003 and placed in the Potemkin park.

Guests of the city will also be interested to see the remains of the Kherson fortress and the arsenal. Although only parts of the structures remained, they still look very interesting and help to move back several centuries and plunge into the events of that time. It was this fortress that two centuries ago was one of the largest fortifications of the Russian Empire. In the middle of the fortress there was a palace and a cathedral, which we talked about a little earlier. Today, tourists can see the building of the arsenal, the cellar that was used to store gunpowder (now there is a restaurant in it), as well as two gates, similar to each other, like two drops of water: the Moscow and Ochakov gates. By the way, this fortress is also known for the fact that Scythian burials were found on its territory by modern archaeologists.

The arsenal of the fortress is the oldest building in Kherson. The arsenal was erected at the end of the 18th century, but then an earthquake occurred, due to which the building was badly damaged. Therefore, in 1812, the arsenal was rebuilt and in the same form it has survived to this day.

If you want to take a walk in the fresh air and look at really beautiful views, then you should visit the Glory Memorial Park. It was built in memory of those soldiers of the Second World War who liberated Kherson from the invaders. The park is located on a hill, and its central alley descends directly to the river. The view from the park is simply incredible - this is one of the most beautiful panoramas of Kherson.
