Uman is one of the most beloved tourist cities in Ukraine. There is nothing strange in this, because it is there that the amazing arboretum "Sofiyivka" is located. It is so beautiful that people go there at any time of the year to enjoy such beauty and take a break from the noise of megacities. Also in Uman there are many other interesting places that are recommended to be visited by both locals and tourists who have already been there. Now we will tell you about an amazing location, which is definitely worth visiting in order to fall in love with Uman and return there more than once.
And this, of course, is the Sofiyivka arboretum. After all, it is he who is the largest decoration of Uman, which is always written about in absolutely all tourist guidebooks. The area of the park is almost 180 hectares. This is a really huge space, so if you are going to visit the park, immediately set aside the whole day for it. The park is located in the northern part of Uman. It was founded more than two centuries ago - in 1796. It was founded by the Polish magnate Stanislav Potocki. In general, the Potocki family at different times has built and founded many important and interesting parks, institutions that are located throughout the Western Northern and even Central Ukraine. But let's get back, in fact, to the arboretum.
So, the park appeared like this: Pototsky's wife, Sofia, was amazed at the Arcadia park, which her friend Helena Radziwill had. Therefore, Mr. Potocki decided that his beloved wife deserves her own park and called for this Polish engineer Ludwig Metzel. For the park, an area was chosen where there was almost no forest. To many, such an idea seemed strange and unrealistic, but in just a few years Matzel was able to create a park that was named "Sofiyivka" in honor of Pototsky's wife. By the way, the entire park is skillfully combined illustrations for such incomparable and majestic works of Homer as The Iliad and The Odyssey. Greek motives were chosen for a reason - Sofia was a Greek woman, and, creating this park, Pototsky wanted to give his wife not just a beautiful green area, but a real piece of her homeland. And he succeeded one hundred percent. All compositions of the park are a reference to certain myths, events, or an expression of Homer's ideas. This park was a truly amazing place, which became a real outlet for Sofia. After all, the local landscapes were indeed a very skillful and beautiful replica of the Greek landscape.
In 1832, the Potocki possessions were confiscated, and the Sofiyivka arboretum was no exception. After the confiscation, a lot has changed in it, but these were changes for the better: the territory expanded, the park was replenished with more than a hundred species of trees, bushes, buildings and gazebos appeared. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, the park was badly damaged, so then it was restored several times. But, even after going through difficult times, he did not lose his beauty. Therefore, today we recommend to everyone who travels to Uman to set aside one day to visit this incredible place and enjoy its beauty.
