Mariupol is a city that is the largest Ukrainian port located on the Azov Sea. It is interesting that once upon a time it was a Cossack fortress, and then, in 1780, it was settled by Greeks who moved from the Crimea. By their arrival, only 200 people lived in the city. But, after the Greeks settled in the city and named it Mariupol, it began to develop. For about a century, this town was a merchant. Many merchants lived there, who were engaged in trade both on the territory of Ukraine and abroad. The town remained small until the end of the 19th century. It was at that time that railways began to be built, which means that the city received high-speed communication with other settlements. And also, metallurgical plants and a deep-water port were built in Mariupol. After that, Mariupol turned into a full-fledged trade and industrial center. And yet, this city gradually became a resort, because this is where many Ukrainians from the southern and eastern regions go. And this is not surprising, because it is inexpensive to live there, the sea is clean, and the infrastructure is well developed. And also, there is an airport in Mariupol, so guests from other countries also often come to this large port city.
If we talk about local attractions, unfortunately, there is almost no ancient architecture in Mariupol. But still, there is something to see in the city, walking in the central part. An interesting architectural landmark of the city is the ensemble, located in the area of Teatralnaya Square. The central building is the Drama Theater. It was built in 1960. The theater was built of Crimean gray stone brought from Inkerman. The front part of the theater has a rather interesting sculptural group and columns.
On the north side of the square there are two more interesting buildings of the ensemble - these are residential buildings with spiers. The corner section of each building has seven floors and a spire. There are two wings attached to this part - one has four floors and the other has five floors. The houses have columns and stucco moldings. Both were built in 1953. By the way, these houses are among the tallest in the Old Town, as most of the architecture of the mid and early twentieth century is low-rise buildings.
A very good place where you can not only look at something beautiful, but also get some fresh air is the City Park. It was founded back in 1867, but at first trees were simply planted there randomly. Only in 1889, the master George Psalti, who studied at Versailles, turned this place into a traditional French park. In 1910, a fountain was installed there. Surprisingly, the park was not damaged during the war, so 17 species of trees, as well as shrubs and grasses are still preserved in it.
But back to the historical part of the city. Among the architectural sights of Mariupol, it is also worth noting the Industrial College, which was once the Mariupol Alexandrovskaya
gymnasium. She moved to this house in 1899 and for a long time was a place that opened up many opportunities for local residents, because it was there that the best teachers taught.
Another old building, which is also a symbol of the city, is the water tower. It is located at the highest point of Mariupol and has been there since 1910. The tower has a fire tower, so after the modernization of the water supply, from 1932 it served as a fire tower. Then there were times when this building was completely dilapidated, but now it has been repaired, and now it pleases the eyes of local residents and guests of Mariupol.
